The notarial profession has long been a sector where confidentiality and professional secrecy are central. As early as 2008 — well before the GDPR existed — the sector was already taking legal and technical measures to protect personal data. When the GDPR came into force, Privanot was set up to provide the notarial profession with an answer, adopting a sector-wide approach that harmonised the implementation of the GDPR.
What started with notaries as clients has grown into a service for more than 850 organisations across widely different sectors: government, liberal professions, business and international institutions. That gives us a genuine understanding of how both private companies and public organisations operate — diverse stakeholders, strict regulation, and accountability towards the citizen.
Building on that experience, we support both organisations that are legally required to appoint a DPO, and organisations for which that isn’t the case but that choose professional privacy support anyway.
We make data protection manageable. Not as a box-ticking exercise, but as a lever for trust — between organisations and the people who rely on them.
Our team is built around three closely collaborating services: legal, technical and operational. Our legal experts specialise in data protection and related fields such as intellectual property and digital consumer law; our technical experts advise on secure processing and storage of digital data, carry out technical audits, and step in when a data breach occurs. Our operational service keeps day-to-day service delivery to our clients smooth and responsive. As AI reshapes how organisations work, a growing team of Legal Experts GDPR & AI is extending that offering further, with particular attention to the public sector.
A Data Protection Officer doesn’t just safeguard legal compliance — they also give your organisation a point of contact that staff, clients and regulators can trust. For some organisations, a DPO is a legal requirement; for others, it’s a deliberate choice to reduce risk and build trust. We help you determine the right approach for your situation.
